I recently watched a true crime program where the victim’s car had been impounded. The case went cold for several years, and was only solved when a new search of the car turned up a damning clue.
This led me to wonder about the procedures for handling crime scenes and the property of murder victims. How long is the crime scene preserved? If it’s an apartment, what rights does a landlord have? What happens to impounded vehicles after the crime is solved? How does next of kin navigate this?
Murder is a messy business, and there must be all sorts of loose ends left after one, so perhaps someone can shed some light on the more mundane aspects?
