Fire and Emergency NZ crews discovered smoke in the lobby upon arrival to the $1 billion Queen St mall at 10.51pm on Tuesday.

The incident was updated to a third alarm, meaning more crews were required, according to a post on the FENZ Communication Centres Facebook page.

At least 10 fire crews are at the scene, smoke was visible from as far as Takapuna on the North Shore.

The fire was found in a skip bin on the 22nd floor. It was put out by 12.05am, the post said.

“A fire investigation is underway.”

Commercial Bay opened on June 11 after six months of delays, attracting more than half a million visitors in its first two weeks.

The shopping precinct’s initial opening date of September 2019 was pushed back to March but was then stymied by the level 4 lockdown.
